Application & Tips

application guide

1. mix well

In a bowl, mix one part powder to two parts conditioner.  For lighter shades, we suggest one part powder to four parts conditioner.  These are only guidelines and you are welcome to play around – Tests strands are your friend!

2. Apply

Apply the mixture evenly, to clean, dry hair.  Make sure hair well saturated.  Avoid contact with eyes and skin.

3. Clean Up

With a warm facecloth/towel and some soap, wipe up any mess – Skin especially.  This dye is high pigment – it will stain.

4. wait

Leave the dye in, for at least 45 minutes.  You may leave it for a longer period but no less than 45 minutes!

5. rinse

Rinse well. Suggestion: Do not shampoo on ‘colour days’

Works best on light or bleached hair. Results will vary depending on hair.
Our dyes are semi-permanent and will fade over 4-10 weeks (on average).
More porous hair may take longer to fade.
Use gloves and old towels/clothing.

tips & tricks

Skin Patch test

Our pigments are made with purified water, corn starch, natural aromatic herbs, and food‑grade colourants. These ingredients are widely used and generally considered safe, though synthetic colourants may occasionally cause sensitivity in some individuals.Because everyone’s skin is unique, we recommend performing a patch test before use. Please also note that the conditioner you mix with the pigment may possibly contain potential allergens.

  • Wash a patch of skin around the back of your ear with a mild soap.
  • Gently towel dry the area.
  • Apply a thin layer of your prepared colour mixture.
  • Allow your test area to dry. Leave it uncovered and undisturbed for 24 hours.
  • After 24 hours, examine the area carefully. If you notice any redness, itching, or irritation, do not apply the product to your hair.

If you have any concerns or a history of skin sensitivities, we recommend consulting a dermatologist before use.

Strand Test Results

A strand test is never a bad idea before beginning a hair colour process. This will simply help you ensure that you get results you are happy with.

For best results, we do recommend pre-lightening/bleaching hair (professionally) to a pale blonde. When colour is applied to virgin (unprocessed/natural) hair, results will vary (according to hair texture and colour).

Applying colour to pre-lightened hair is the best way to assure that you will achieve the most vibrant results. Although some natural hair shades may get a slight tint from some of our colours, we cannot and do not guarantee that the colour will work properly, unless hair has been pre-lightened.

Results on natural hair will not be as intense and will usually wash out faster. It is the porosity of the hair that determines whether or not natural hair picks up the pigments. Natural blonde hair may also require bleaching to become more porous.

Tip for best absorption

Before application:
Wash hair with a deep cleansing/clarifying shampoo (only before).

  • Do not condition.
  • Do not add any hair products such as leave-in conditioner or heat protection.
  • Dry hair naturally, or with a hair dryer – Make sure hair is 100% dry before applying colour mixture.
  • Please note that although using a hair dryer will assist with opening up the hair cuticle – it can also be harsh on hair with no protective product in.
  • Have a mixing bowl, gloves, tint brush, comb, old clothes and old towels ready.
  • Section the hair you will be colouring. Apply petroleum jelly on skin around your hairline (forehead, ears, neck, etc…).

Our product does not contain harsh chemicals and does not alter the natural structure of the hair.

Natural hair is smooth and not highly porous, which means it doesn’t readily hold onto pigment. Bleaching lightens the hair so colours appear more vibrant, while also opening the cuticles of the hair strands to help the pigment cling more effectively. On untreated hair, the colour may rinse out more easily, leaving a softer or shorter‑lasting stain.

Important safety note: This product should never be used on eyebrows or eyelashes. If accidental eye contact occurs, rinse immediately with warm water and seek medical attention.

Using gloves, mix your powder and conditioner into a plastic mixing bowl.

  • Apply colour mixture to the hair you will be colouring.
  • Comb through and ensure you have evenly applied and hair is thoroughly saturated
  • Leave on for 45-60 minutes (we usually leave in for 60 minutes).
  • Rinse hair with cool/cold water until water runs clear. Since the dye was applied over clean hair, we do not recommend shampooing after application.
  • Towel and/or blow dry hair. Style as usual.

Tip for maintaining your hair colour:

  • Use a sulphate free, colour friendly shampoo and conditioner.
  • Rinse hair with cool/cold water.
  • Washing hair daily will result in colour fading sooner.
  • Consider using a high end, dry shampoo for between regular washes.
  • Regular “colour friendly” shampoos may also fade colour faster, unless specifically stated that the product is sulphate free.

Also avoid shampoos with high levels of sodium chloride or oils.

If colour is mixed according to our recommended ratio,  one (1) 100ml tub of powder pigment should be more than enough to cover hair length of approximately 25-30 centimetres, of average thickness.

  • More product may be required for thicker/fuller/longer hair.
  • Leftover mixture may be stored in an air-tight container and used for touch-ups – Rather mix too much than too little!
  • Unmixed powder does not expire – Store out of direct sunlight.

The colour of the hair you apply the product to, matters:

  • Our dye is not opaque, and due to having no harsh chemicals, it cannot lift or tone the hair colour that it is applied to.
  • The colour your hair is when you dye it, may show through the dye. And in turn, affect the results you achieve – Test strands are your friend.
  • If you apply blue pigment on yellow hair, the results could come out green.
  • Due to the product not containing any lightening/lifting properties it cannot tint very dark/black hair. The product may however slightly tint lighter shades of brown hair, although results will not be as vibrant.

Tip to help your colour last longer:

  • Rinse out the hair colour with cold water, until the water runs clear.
  • Rinse your hair with a diluted white vinegar mixture, straight after rinsing. This helps lower the pH level of the hair and closes the cuticle of the hair.
  • Mix a cup of white vinegar with a cup of cold water in a bowl.
  • Slowly pour the mixture over the hair.
  • Comb through and let sit for 3-5 minutes.

How long does the hair dye last and will it wash out completely?

ALL hair is different, and results will always vary!
How long the colour lasts — and whether it washes out completely — depends on your individual hair type and its condition.

  • Porous hair tends to hold pigment longer, and in some cases the colour may not wash out completely.

  • Less porous hair may release the colour more quickly, as the pigment does not cling as firmly to the surface.

Other factors that influence how long the colour lasts (or how quickly it fades) include:

  • Frequency of washing

  • Products used on your hair

  • Water temperature during rinsing

  • Time spent swimming or in the sun

These everyday habits all contribute to how long the colour lasts or how quickly it fades.

Note: If used for temporary “holiday hair” on children, please keep in mind that the pigment may not wash out completely before school resumes.
